# How AI is changing web development, and what it means for your business website

Published: 2024-01-13 · Brand E5

> AI now writes much of the first draft of website code and content, so building a site is faster and cheaper. It has not removed the need for clear goals, speed, security and human review. For business owners, the biggest change is that your site must now answer questions well enough for both Google and AI assistants.

AI has changed web development in two ways. It writes much of the first draft of code and content, so a business site can be built faster and for less. And it has changed how people find websites, because many now get answers from AI assistants and Google's AI Overviews before they click.

What AI has not changed is the hard part: deciding what the site must achieve, keeping it fast and secure, and checking that every line is correct. This post explains what is different now, what is not, and what a business owner in India should ask for.

## How developers use AI today

AI coding tools are now normal. In the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025, 84% of respondents said they use or plan to use AI tools in their development work, up from 76% the year before. About half of professional developers use them every day.

The same survey shows the limits clearly:

- More developers distrust the accuracy of AI tools (46%) than trust it (33%).
- The most common frustration, named by 66%, is AI answers that are "almost right, but not quite".
- About 45% said debugging AI-generated code takes time.
- A majority still do not use AI agents, or stick to simpler AI tools.

Developers in India were among the most positive, with 56% saying they trust AI tools highly or somewhat, compared with 22% in Germany, according to Stack Overflow's press release.

In plain terms: AI is a fast junior assistant. It is useful, it is often right, and it still needs a senior person to check its work.

## What AI does well in a website project

### First drafts of layout and code

Give an AI tool a clear description and it can produce a page layout, a form or a component in minutes. For standard pieces such as a pricing table, a contact form or a blog listing, this saves real hours.

### Content outlines and rewrites

AI can turn notes into a first draft of a service page, suggest headings people search for, and shorten long copy. It works best when someone who knows the business gives it facts and then edits the result.

### Testing and checks

AI tools can suggest test cases, find broken links, spot missing image descriptions, and explain error messages. This makes small teams faster at quality work they used to skip.

### Repetitive changes

Updating 40 product descriptions, renaming a field across a site, or converting old pages to a new layout is slow by hand and quick with AI help.

## What AI does not do for you

### Decide what the site is for

A website for a dental clinic in Hyderabad has one job: get the right patients to call or book. AI will happily build a beautiful page that hides the phone number. A person has to set the goal and judge every page against it.

### Guarantee correct, safe code

The "almost right" problem matters most here. A contact form that looks fine but does not validate input, or stores data carelessly, can cause real harm. Every AI-written change should be reviewed and tested before it goes live.

### Know your business

AI does not know your prices, your best customers, the questions people ask on WhatsApp, or what makes you different. Without that, it writes generic copy that sounds like every other site.

### Keep the site fast

AI tools often add more code than needed. Speed still has to be designed and measured.

## Speed still decides who wins

Google's Core Web Vitals are still the standard way to measure page experience. According to web.dev, a good page should:

| Metric | What it measures | Good |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How fast the main content appears | 2.5 seconds or less |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How fast the page responds to taps | 200 milliseconds or less |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much the page jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |

These are measured at the 75th percentile of real visits, on mobile and desktop separately. In India, where many visitors browse on mid-range phones and mobile data, hitting these numbers on mobile matters more than how the site looks on a large monitor.

## Does AI make websites cheaper?

Partly. The first draft of a standard page now takes less time, so simple sites cost less to build than they did a few years ago. The work that decides whether a site brings customers has not shrunk much: understanding the business, writing clear copy, setting up tracking, testing on real phones, and fixing what AI got almost right.

A fair way to think about it: AI lowers the cost of typing, not the cost of thinking. Be careful with any quote that is very cheap because "AI builds it". Ask who checks the result, and what happens when something breaks after launch.

## How AI changes the way people find your site

The second big change is in search. People now ask full questions and get summarised answers from Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and assistants such as ChatGPT.

Many owners assume this needs special tricks. Google's guidance says otherwise: there are no additional requirements, special files or schema markup needed to appear in its AI features. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Beyond that, Google points to the usual basics:

- Let Google crawl the site.
- Link your pages to each other so content is easy to find.
- Give visitors a good page experience.
- Put important information in text, not only in images.
- Keep structured data matching what the page actually says.
- Keep your Business Profile up to date.

What this means in practice is simple. Write each important page so it answers one question clearly in the first few lines, with real facts: what you offer, where, for whom, and from what price. That kind of page works for a person, for Google, and for an AI assistant summarising your business.

## What to ask for in your next website

If you are planning a new site or a rebuild, these are the questions worth asking any developer or agency.

1. **What is the one action this site should drive?** A call, a WhatsApp message, a booking, or an order. Every page should lead there.
2. **How fast will it load on a mid-range phone?** Ask for Core Web Vitals numbers, not adjectives.
3. **Who reviews AI-written code and content?** There should be a named person and a testing step.
4. **Can I update text and prices myself?** If every change needs a developer, the site will go stale.
5. **How are leads tracked?** Form fills, calls and WhatsApp taps should all be counted.
6. **Does each service page answer a real question in text?** This is what both search and AI assistants read.
